The Lord Mayor of the City of London Nick Anstee, who represents UK-based financial services, arrives in South Africa in two weeks time. The visit is part of a series of high-level visits between the UK and South Africa to explore areas of collaboration and forge greater links and co-operation in the South Africa-UK trade relationship.
Supported by UK Trade & Investment, the Lord Mayor will visit Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban (22-26 March 2010) to meet with policy makers, finance chiefs as well as central bankers and business leaders. The Lord Mayor’s role will be to promote through networking events the education, training and qualifications in the UK's financial services sector; the internationalisation of legal services; offer to share the UK’s wide experience in PPP funding of infrastructure; green solutions for business; and ideas on how to take advantage of new funding streams, for example for Sharia-compliant finance.
During his visit, the Lord Mayor - who heads the Square Mile business district at the heart of London - will also attend a high-profile business networking reception to cement South Africa-UK partnership opportunities for upcoming major sporting events in the UK in the next decade. This reception is jointly hosted by the British Government and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), who will announce the South African Paralympic Team sponsors for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Lord Mayor Nick Anstee said: “The UK is a world-leading financial centre and the single most internationally focused financial market place in the world. The World Economic Forum’s Financial Development Report in 2009 ranked the UK in first place, boosted by the provision of services such as IPOs, M&A activity and insurance.
“It is clear that although global markets have been shaken by events of the last year, London is making a good recovery with equities, foreign exchange, insurance, marine and commodities trading moving ahead. Indeed, our experience of the crisis has been that it has provided an opportunity to develop partnerships to foster future economic growth. "That is why on this visit I will be encouraging South African institutions to look to London as a partner to raise capital and to do business. I will also explore the potential for building education and training links between our companies and institutions."
